CENTENNIAL TASTE OF ARIZONALeading up to Arizona’s 100th birthday in 2012, The Stockyards is asking citizens from across Arizona to help create the official Centennial Menu as a lasting legacy for future generations to add to and enjoy. Recipes could be from your favorite Arizona restaurant or from your grandmother’s kitchen. The final menu selections will be determined by the Centennial Commission and featured at the Stockyards beginning February 15, 2011.
CELEBRATING ARIZONA’S INFLUENCERSThe Stockyards is hosting a series of events that recognize and thank deserving Arizonan’s for their impact on the history and future of the state. Each event will be themed according to the honoree’s impact on Arizona. To commemorate the honoree’s Arizona legacy, the Stockyards will dedicate a booth in their name highlighting their story. June 26, 2010, the same month and day The Stockyards reopened more than fifty years ago, marked the first official centennial celebration for our state. The Stockyards and the Arizona Centennial Commission dedicated a booth in the infamous Gold Room to honor the Tovrea family for their influence on Arizona. E.A. Tovrea, the original owner of The Stockyards, was one of 52 delegates that attended the Arizona Constitutional Convention in 1910. In 1919, Arizona’s original “Cattle Baron” opened the Tovrea Stockyards, the world’s largest pen-feeding operation. The Stockyards officially opened in 1947 and quickly became a favorite gathering place for cattlemen, bankers and politicians. To date, deals are still settled over a tasty Stockyards steak. |
